Easy Halloween Bird Cage Fromdollar Tree Hanging Flower Planters

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. There is nothing more I love to do than head to Dollar Tree and create some fun decorations for our Halloween display.  On Halloween night, we have Halloween music, a fog machine, some crazy jack o'lanterns and a souped up trick or treating table with all kinds of dazzling lights.  I start early with the decorating in September, so our yard is ready for the big night.

Every year I hang some kind of creepy decorations from our big tree.  Sometimes it's ghosts.  This year, it's DIY Dollar Store Halloween Bird Cages with creepy things inside them.  You will not believe how easy these are to make.  And, they're made from laundry baskets you can get from the Dollar Tree!

The great thing about these bird cages is that you can totally make it your own.  I just walked through the Halloween aisle picking up stuff I thought would look creepy from a skull and bones to a crow and more. But there's lots more to choose from!

DIY Halloween Bird Cage Supplies

• 2 Laundry Baskets
• LED lights
• Bones
• Creepy cloth
• Spider Web
• black zip ties
• black and silver spray paint
• and more!

To get the laundry baskets ready as a bird cage,  you'll need to cut the tops off.  Then, spray paint black and spray paint silver to give them an old look.

I started with decorating the bottom part of the cage.  I decided to create a light up skull with these great LED lights I found at Dollar Tree.  They are so bright!  I used my craft knife and cut an opening in the bottom of the skull.

I zip tied the battery pack to the bottom of the laundry basket and fed the lights through.  Then, I put the lights inside the skull.  This way I have easy access to turn it on/off and can change the batteries.

I hot glued the skull to the bottom of the laundry basket.

Next, I hot glued a crow to the top of the skull and added some purple spider web.  Make sure to add enough spider web that when you put the cage pieces together, you can pull it up and around the top part of the cage as well.

I hot glued a skeleton hand inside these hand cuffs.  These are going on the outside of the cage after it's all put together.

Next, I added some lights to the top part of the cage.  Dollar Tree had some cute pumpkin and bat lights.  I picked up the bat ones to go along with the purple and black coloring.  I zip tied the battery pack on top of the cage and fed the lights through the holes of the laundry basket.  I zip tied the lights in a couple of places and then left a couple additional places where I would attach them to the zip ties that hold the cage together.

Next, I attached this creepy chain with hot glue to the top of the laundry basket as well as a spider.

Lastly, I cut a piece of the gray creepy cloth and pulled the weave to make big holes. Then, I attached it to the top of the inside of the laundry basket.  I wanted it to hang down inside like it had been some old piece of clothing from the skull.

Then, it was time to zip tie the two baskets together. I put the two halves together and every 4-5 holes, I tied them together with a zip tie.  Then, I zip tied the skeleton hand in the handcuffs to the side.

I fed a piece of string through the top of the cage and hung it on our tree out front.  This is the finished look in the day time. Once I hung it on the tree, I took the extra pieces of spider web and pulled them up to the top of the cage and down to the handcuffs.

Here is the night time version with the skull lit up and the bat lights on. One down and four more to go! I'm in the middle of making 4 more of these to hang throughout our tree to completely decorate it.
